A frequent nemoral species with two 'subspecies' differentiated
by vague characters such as the the length and the number of teeth
on the margins of the leaves (ssp.
carpatica (Klokov) P.V. Ball) which rather seem to be a
clinal variation of the species from western to easten Europe. The
flowers of this supposed subspecies seems also to be quite
different. In southern Italy, Sicily and the Balkans there is ssp.
albida.
